The best spots to see in Uluru, Northern Territory

Day 1, Uluru

  • We rented a car in Hertz rental.  Collection of a vehicle’s at the airport. A good option’s a mystery car – you can save some dollars and we got 2 years Toyota RAV4. (3 days for 120 AUD + insurance).
  • When we got a car we went straight to check in our Ayers Rock accommodation – Outback Pioneer Lodge (4 people/1 day – 184 AUD).
  • We had left our baggage in a bungalow, got in the car and drove to see this magic rock – Uluru. (25 AUD per person for National Park entrance fee).
  • In the evening we went to see Field of Light Uluru. You need to book it ahead on ayersrockresort.com or in the reception. Field of Light Uluru is an installation of millions of led lights on a desert. We like it. (1 person – 40 AUD).

Tips

  • Don’t overpay for car insurance in a rental. Buy it on rentalcover.com.
  • Instead of Field of Light, you can choose sunset with Uluru in the background. The best lookout is Uluru Sunset Viewing Area. You can find the location on our Google Maps
  • In Ayers Rock, you can find supermarket IGA. A little bit more expansive, but still cheaper than in a restaurant.

Day 2, Uluru – Kata Tjuta – Kings Canyon

  • Sunrise with Uluru in the background. The sun rises in February at 6:30 am.
  • We got on the road to Kata Tjuta (Olgas).
  • We stopped at Kata Tjuta – Valley of the Winds. A short 30-minute walk to the down of rock formation.
  • It’s worth stopping for 15 minutes at Kata Tjuta Viewing Area.
  • Got on the road again, now to Kings Canyon Resort. We refilled our tank and took a picture with a camel at Kings Creek Station. You can eat something here, as well.
  • We arrived at the Kings Canyon resort in the evening. There’s not much to do here after sunset, but there is a pub with a beer. (4 people – 129 AUD)
Tips

  • If you can’t get up in the morning for sunrise then, it’s great to join a free guided tour in Uluru. It starts in Mala Car Park at 8:00 from October to April, or 10:00 other months. More information on northernterritory.com

Day 3, Kings Canyon

  • We got up in the early morning for Kings Canyon Rim Walk. It’s 3-4 hours trekking. We highly recommend this track. It’s better to start before sunrise, as temperature’s not that high and the view of the rising sun’s stunning.
  • On the way back we stopped at Mount Conner Lookout.
  • We spent the last night at Curtin Springs Station. The conditions of this accommodation’s very budget but climatic. You sleep in a free-standing container with air conditioning and beds. In the garden, you can meet Emu, a lot of parrots and snakes in jars in the reception. (Two people for 105 AUD).

Day 4, Ayers Rock Airport

  • Return to the airport and drop off the car.

Tips

  • In the dry season (between December and March) temperatures reach over 40′ degrees. Always carry water, a suncream and a hat.
  • It’s good to buy head nets against flies. In the dry season, there’re thousands of them. You can also buy a repellent – Bushman.
  • Do you prefer to sleep under a cloud in a tent? There is an option – you can find campsites in Ayers Rock and Kings Canyon. (20 AUD per person)
